Battery add-on

Solar battery cost in NZ, and when it pays

A home solar battery costs about $1,219 per kWh of storage installed in New Zealand in 2026, and a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 is $19,000 to $24,000 (Solar Scout). Adding one stretches payback from 6 to 8 years to 10 to 14, so it suits homes with heavy evening use or a need for backup.

When we'd suggest a battery

  • Most of your use is in the evening or overnight
  • You charge an EV overnight
  • You get frequent outages, or need backup for medical equipment
  • Your buy-back rate is low and you export a lot

If none of these apply, we'll tell you a battery probably won't pay, and suggest a hybrid-ready inverter so you can add one later.

How much does a solar battery cost in NZ?

About $1,219 per kWh of storage installed on average in 2026. A 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 is $19,000 to $24,000 installed, and about $15,600 supply-only including its Gateway (Solar Scout).

What's the payback on a solar battery?

Solar Scout puts solar plus battery at 10 to 14 years, against 6 to 8 years for solar alone, and 15 years or more for adding a battery to an existing system.

Will a battery keep my power on in an outage?

Only if it's installed with backup capability. A grid-tied system without one switches off in a power cut.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes. Choosing a hybrid-ready inverter now makes it simpler, though retrofits have the longest payback.

What warranty should a battery have?

At least 10 years for lithium-ion, EECA's minimum (EECA).
