10kW solar system: price, output and consent
A 10kW home solar system typically costs $15,000 to $18,000 installed in New Zealand in 2026 (Solar Scout). At around 46 m² of panels it is larger than the 40 m² consent exemption for roof arrays, so it needs a Chartered Professional Engineer to design or review the installation to stay exempt.
What you get
- System size
- 10kW
- Panels
- 22 to 23 × 440W panels
- Roof space
- about 46 m² of usable roof
- Suits
- Large or fully electric homes (EV, heat pumps, hot water) using 10,000 to 14,000 kWh a year
- Panel and inverter brands
- Named in your contract
- For households with an EV, several heat pumps or plans to go fully electric.
- Over 40 m², so the design must be carried out or reviewed by a Chartered Professional Engineer to use the consent exemption. The survey checks whether yours needs it.
- 10kW is also the usual export limit for a standard lines-company application (Vector, Powerco, Aurora and others).
Included in the price
- Panels, inverter, racking, cabling and surge protection
- Scaffolding or edge protection where needed
- Lines-company application
- Import/export meter arrangement
- Inspection and certificates
- Monitoring app set up
- Installer's workmanship warranty passed through to you
Not included: roof repairs or switchboard upgrades the survey finds. You see those in writing before you sign.
Estimated output by region
| Region | Lines company | Yearly output | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Vector | 13,500 – 14,500 kWh | Waitlist |
| Waikato | WEL Networks | ~14,000 kWh (NZ average) | Waitlist |
| Bay of Plenty | Powerco | 14,500 – 15,500 kWh | Waitlist |
| Wellington | Wellington Electricity | 12,500 – 14,000 kWh | Waitlist |
| Canterbury | Orion | 13,000 – 14,500 kWh | Waitlist |
| Otago | Aurora Energy | ~14,000 kWh (NZ average) | Waitlist |
Actual output depends on roof direction, pitch and shade, which the survey measures. See how it works and what solar costs in NZ.
10kW package questions
How much does a 10kW solar system cost in NZ?
Typically $15,000 to $18,000 installed in 2026 (Solar Scout). Compare that with $11,000 to $13,000 for 5kW: the price per kW falls as systems get bigger.
Does a 10kW system need a building consent?
Roof arrays over 40 m² can still be exempt, but only if a Chartered Professional Engineer carries out or reviews the design (EWRB). A 10kW array of 440W panels is about 46 m².
Can I export all of a 10kW system?
Most lines companies accept standard applications for systems up to 10kW, including Vector, Powerco and Aurora Energy (MySolarQuotes). Wellington Electricity's limit isn't listed in the same table, so we check it in the survey.
Is 10kW too big?
Only if you can't use or sell the extra. Export typically earns 8c to 24c per kWh against about 40c for power you use yourself, so oversizing pays off less than using more of your own solar.
