Solar Panels NZ

About

The reference directory for NZ home solar

Solar Panels NZ is the editorially maintained reference directory for grid-connected residential solar in Aotearoa. Listings are vetted against NZECP 36 compliance, Solar Association NZ membership and EECA-aligned performance reporting. The on-site calculator publishes its assumptions on the page.

Editorial position

Residential solar in New Zealand sits at the intersection of electrical compliance, grid-connection rules, retailer buy-back tariffs and a fragmented installer market. Most homeowners purchase once, without a benchmark for what a defensible quote looks like. This directory publishes that benchmark — installer listings vetted against industry credentials, and a sizing calculator with its assumptions printed on the page rather than buried in a sales proposal.

Listing standards

Inclusion requires Solar Association New Zealand membership and a Master Electricians-registered electrical contractor responsible for the install, with all grid-tied work executed under NZECP 36 and AS/NZS 4777. Installers must have at least three years of NZ residential trading history and no unresolved Disputes Tribunal or Commerce Commission proceedings. Listings are reviewed annually and adjusted based on documented customer outcomes, not advertising spend.

Calculator methodology

Generation estimates use EECA Energywise irradiance data by region, with degradation, inverter efficiency, and self-consumption ratios shown as named inputs. Buy-back tariffs are sourced from current published retailer schedules. Payback figures assume a grid-connected install under standard distribution-network terms; off-grid and hybrid configurations are flagged separately because the economics differ materially.

Scope of the directory

This directory does not provide engineering advice. The material published here — installer listings, calculator estimates and long-form reference articles — is general in nature. Advice specific to a particular roof, retailer plan and distribution network is the domain of the Solar Association NZ-affiliated and Master Electricians-registered installers listed in this directory, whose advice carries professional accountability under NZ electrical regulations.
